An ocean is a large water body or basin that exists on this earth. Oceans and seas are always mesmerizing and beautiful to see. It is relatively larger than lakes and rivers. Their massive sizes are a clear indicator of the strength of nature.

They play a very important role in shaping our climate and weather patterns. Well here is a list of the top 10 deepest oceans and seas in the world. 

10. Black Sea

The Black Sea is located between Eastern and southeastern Europe and western Asia. It has an average depth of 1190 meters. This ocean is bounded by countries such as Bulgaria, Georgia, Romania, Russia, Turkey and Ukraine. The Black sea also has the largest meromictic basin in the world. Basin is a geographical term referring to a place where the deep waters and the upper waters do not mixes, which form the dark and dark color. 

9. South China Sea

The South China Sea is part of Pacific Ocean. It covers an area of about 3,500,000 square kilometers and has an average depth of 1463 meters. Some of the states that border the South China Sea are Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Vietnam and People’s Republic of China. There are over 200 islands and reefs in this sea. Islands in this water body cover an area of 810 to 900 km. Taiping Island covers a large area of these islands. Almost all countries that border the sea wants it to be declared international water because nearly a one-third of all worlds shipping sails through these waters and trillions of global trade passes through here. 

8. Bering Sea

The Bering Sea is considered as a northern extension of the Pacific Ocean. It covers an area of about 2,000,000 square kilometers and has an average depth of 1491 meters. It boarded in the west by Russia, east by Alaska and Kamchatka Peninsula on the south and Aleutian Islands on the north. Some of its islands include Nunivak, St. Lawrence and St. Matthews. This sea is also the habitat of some of the most exotic wildlife and marine species like a walrus, Sea lion, seabirds, polar bear and the rare Humpback Whale

The sea is of higher salinity than the Atlantic Ocean and its primary inflows include the Nile, Sea of Marmara Ebro, Rhone and Chelf River.

This water body is estimated to hold a depth of average 1614 meters. ‘Sigsbee Deep’ is deepest point in the Gulf of Mexico, which is 4,384 meter deep. There are about 29 marine mammal species, 49 shark species, 5 endangered sea turtles found in the Gulf of Mexico. 

5. Sea of Japan

The Sea of Japan is also known as East Sea. The Sea of Japan is connected to other seas by straits such as Kanmon Straits, Korean Strait, La Perouse Strait, Tartary Straits and Tsugaru Strait. This water body is best known with basins such as Japan basins, Tsushima and Yamato. It has an average depth of 1,752 meters and the depth of this sea is constant and very less disturbed. This sea is very calm and does not experience a lot of differences in the underwater terrain.

The Caribbean Sea is part of the Atlantic Ocean in the western hemisphere. This sea covers an area of 2, 754, 000 square kilometers and it has an average depth of 2,200 meters. Some of the countries the border the sea are Columbia, Panama and Venezuela to its south, central American countries on the west together with Mexico, in the north by Greater Antilles countries, and the Lesser Antilles to the east. The deepest point in the Caribbean Sea is Cayman Trench. 


3. Atlantic Ocean

The ocean has an average depth of around 3,646 meters. The ‘Puerto Rico Trench’ is deepest point in the Atlantic Ocean, which is 8,605 meters deep. The ocean is interconnected global ocean as it is connected in the north by the Arctic Ocean, the Indian Ocean to the south-east and the Pacific Ocean to the south-west, and the Southern Ocean in the south.

The countries that border the Indian Ocean are India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Iran to the north, Australia to the east, Africa and Arabian Peninsula to its western part. It water body is famous for its beautiful and different shades of clear blue waters.

The Pacific Ocean has the most number of seamounts, which are mountain chains submerged under the Sea. Some of the countries bouldering the ocean is Asia, America and Australia.
